INFORMATION ON THE PARK or CENTRE SELECTED

 THE PARK
The Garajonay National Park was the first natural area in Spain included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites (1986). We invite you to get to know the Park because this is one of Europe’s oldest forests, which are genuine relics of the Tertiary Period. It is like taking a leap backwards in time and walking through the ancient forests which covered a large part of the Mediterranean basin millions of years ago and which disappeared as a consequence of the climatic changes of the Quaternary. This is a woodland that is full of contrasts which covers the highlands of the island and which receives the full influence of the trade winds, the origin of the frequent mists, making them mysterious places that are full of life. In this relatively limited territory there is a great variety of animal and plant species, which you can only find here since the great majority are exclusive to the Canary Islands and many of them only live on La Gomera (endemic species). The Garajonay National Park is part of such International Conservation Networks as Natura 2000 (places of great ecological value and great biodiversity in Europe), SPA (area of special protection for birds) and SCI (sites of community importance). You will get to know a space of great ecological value, with a great variety of ecosystems, ready and organised with suitable installations and services which make it easier to visit and enjoy the Park.
